The Honeymoon - In Summation

Week 1

We arrived in Milan and stayed for but one brief night. The next morning we hopped on a train and headed east to Lido. Lido is a small island directly across from Venice but minus the crowds. Turns out we ended up liking Lido much more than Venice and spent the majority of our time on Lido Island walking, eating, and enjoying the sunshine.

Our hotel room was nice, small as is usually the case in Europe, but it had a lovely large balcony with chairs which more than made up for the small size of the room. We spent time reading and drinking the inexpensibe red wines that seem to call your name whenever in Italy.

The food in Venice and Lido was....OK. We found the selection limited, the prices high (not helped by a weak dollar), and the service standard. By the time we departed we were pretty sick of Pizza Margherita. We ate the Continental breakfast at the hotel each day which was actually pretty good...other than the terrible coffee that came out of an odd coffee-in-a-box machine. Push the "latte" button and coffee and milk came out the bottom. Yuk.

Other than the so-so food we had a lovely time in Lido. We admired our new rings and said "husband" and "wife" on a regular basis, admiring the new-found spirit and meaning of the words.

Week 2

Heaven on Earth! We took a train from Venice back to Milan and then on to The Cinque Terra. Oh my golly....The Cinque Terra is so amazing! Beautiful (it's on the Italian Riviera), amazing food, nice people, and wonderful shopping. Again, the weak dollar impacted spending, but we had a marvelous time.

Our hotel was great and the Continental breakfast included real coffee! We had a great view from our room, there was a beautiful garden with views of the Riviera, and the staff was wonderful. The bed sucked.

The food here was everything you would expect in Italy - fresh, well-presented, and yummy. We discovered "Mickey's" - the best restaurant I've eaten at in all my days. Great, great, great food. K and I loved it so much we ate there twice. They serve a lot of focaccia in this part of Italy and it was a perfect lunch meal; focaccia with pesto, some water, and a view of the Italian Riviera. "I don't want to go home!"

I don't know what more to say....it was such an amazing place and experience that words won't do it justice. If you ever have a chance to go to The Cinque Terra....go! You won't regret it.

We took a train back to Milan, crashed for a night, took a bus to the airport, and did our best to enjoy two very long plane rides on the journey home.

Home sweet home....as husband and wife.
